Thomas Becker’s life’s work is the broad field of landscape representation, which he has been exploring for 35 years. He focuses on the tension between primeval and cultivated land, between “ideal and real landscapes.” Thomas Becker hikes through selected urban, cultural, and primeval landscapes with his camera. In his studio, he then uses traditional painting techniques to transform his photographic sketches into representative images of our landscapes in a process that takes weeks to complete.
The traditional painting technique forces calm and deliberation, forming a counterpoint to contemporary digital image production.
Panel paintings in oil on canvas, monumental unique books based on poems by Paul Celan, and photography with an 18×24 cm large-format camera can be explored on Thomas Becker’s website. The virtual museum KUNSTRAUM ULM invites you to take a tour here.
